TÍTULO:
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF BRAZILIAN AND ARGENTINIAN MOBIUS GROUPS WITH OCULAR AND PHYSICAL ANOMALIES

OBJETIVO:
To compare the sociodemographic and gestational profiles, and ocular and physical anomalies of Möbius sequence patients from Brazil and Argentina.

MÉTODO:
Parents or caregivers of 72 Möbius sequence patients answered a structured questionnaire. Patients were assessed using the same standardized protocol. For data analysis, patients were divided in two groups depending on the country of origin.

RESULTADOS:
Fifty-four participants were from the Brazilian Möbius group (BMG) and 18 were from Argentina (AMG). There was no significant difference in mothers’ education level in both studied groups. BMG had a higher frequency of unmarried parents (P = 0.0002). Both groups were similar regarding type of delivery, abortion rate, and gestation duration (P = 0.73, 0.60, 0.97 and 0.90, respectively). Misoprostol exposure was present in 51.7% of the BMG and 70.6% of the AMG (P = 0.27). Main ocular findings in BMG and AMG were, respectively, strabismus (67.2% and 82.4%), incomplete eye closure (62.1% and 55.6%), tearing when eating (41.4% and 16.7%) and lack of emotional tearing (37.9% and 27.8%). Esotropia was significantly more common in the AMG (P = 0.003). Both groups had the same main systemic findings: clubfoot (60.3% and 77.8%) and autism (38.9% and 11.8%) (P = 0.14 and 0.07, respectively). Poland-Mobius sequence was observed in 5.2% of the patients from BMG.

CONCLUSÕES:
This study suggests that the sociodemographic and gestational profiles, and the ocular and physical anomalies of patients with Mobius sequence from both countries are very similar. The majority of the patients were exposed to misoprostol during pregnancy.
